They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

I can speak from experience that this place should only be accessed by a 4 x 4 vehicle. End result – precious birding time lost and 43 adopted African kids. He had mistakenly walked into a nice clump of buffalo bean whilst chasing a Singing Cisticola. Just make sure to carry extra fuel and watch out for buffalo bean!

He interpreted the bones, also at Klasies but other sites in South Africa as well, to indicate that human ancestors hunted only Eland until they became fully modern very recently, then they started hunting the much more dangerous and harder to hunt Buffalo. Any buffalo bones from prior to that transition were obviously scavenged.
