Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. The juvenile Chinese Blackbirds get older but still look kind of stupid. But the stars of the month were some breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows. The male at work.

By the last year of the war, the US increased its military aid to the Greek Government and introduced a new weapon: the first napalm attack after World War II took place right here! Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people.

I chanced to glance at a bird perched atop the Oak tree in my back yard, figuring it was one of the Blackbirds or Grackles that had recently returned to my neighborhood. Wicked, right? I can’t help it, there’s just so much interesting stuff up there. Instead I saw a flash of orange. Hat-tip to Stella.

The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. This Coopers Hawk flew right up to the roof on a flood control booth, and looked at me like “ What are you doing out here” and promptly flew away. This one flew right over my head.

Blackbirds&# do not have the same ability. Now, most people are dealing with grackles on their northward migration right now. If you have been feeding black-oil sunflower and suddenly switch to straight safflower, birds will abandon your feeders. They are clinging birds and use the technique on branches and tree trunks.

As in the first edition, all bird images for all species are drawn facing or flying right. In the case of hawks, this often means flying up and to the right, and in the case of White-breasted Nuthatch, this means facing down and to the right. But, always to the right. I wish we had the equivalent for color.
