Tomorrow I’m taking part in my local club’s official Big Day event – the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club’s 73 rd Annual Guy Bartlett Century Run – for my fifth year in a row. But if you’re parched, exhausted, and flushed with Big Day birding success, by all means, throw caution to the wind and drink up with abandon. There’s always one.

Hard to imagine nowadays, this majestic mountain setting was a major communist guerilla stronghold in the Greek Civil War (1946-1949) and the region is scarred by the events and the memories of them. Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people.

The birds were right next to an old abandoned farm house, and seemed quite happy to have their photo taken, up to a point, but then like the wind, they were gone, out thru the flat desert areas of New Mexico! Here is one of those Downy Woodpeckers. Jeanne loves this shot, so here it is!!
