Snowy-browed Nuthatch

I was ostensibly taking a day off from birding. mile stretch at Mutianyu , also visited by Michele Obama in 2014. But the birds soon asserted themselves on the day. Oriental Greenfinches used the wires to perch and a Plain Laughingthrush picked through the leaf litter on this cold November morning. How fortuitous is that?

A fact to which my wife will begrudgingly attest, as my memory is excellent when it comes to anything bird-related yet exceptionally poor otherwise. I expected to learn a thing or two and possibly see some birds I had never seen before. As prolific as the area was, the group was on the move. Third time’s the charm, they say.

Northern Australia birding

Last month we went camping and birding north of Broome and headed into the Northern Territory in search of some bird species that we had not seen yet this year. It is a great time of year for camping and birding and we had not been beyond Timber Creek in the Northern Territory since 2014. White-browed Crake. Apostlebird.

Juvenile Superb Lyrebird

This year we had a holiday in the Blue Mountains at the end of September instead of May , which we last did in 2014. The female Superb Lyrebird also has an impressive tail as you can see in the header photo, but not quite as spectacular as the male bird.
