Birdlife South Africa has previously done two of these types of trips before, previously called Flock to Sea – Namibia in 2013 and Flock to Nowhere in 2017, in partnership with MSC Cruises. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. About half of all breeding Wandering Albatross nest on the Prince Edward Islands.

And we in Wellington had a bit of a shock when a swarm of quakes struck our region in 2013. Thanks to it’s marine canyon it’s the place to see Sperm Whales, swim with Dusky Dolphins and New Zealand Fur-seals, and watch albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels. White-capped Albatrosses are easy to see.

But, by December 2013, my eyes, and the eyes of birders across the country, were fixed on Neil and where he was headed next, and if—that huge if—he would see “The Bird.” Technically, Hayward ended 2013 with 747 ABA birds and 3 provisional birds. By the end of February, Hayward has seen 294 birds in five states and two provinces.
