On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. We encountered one crossing the road in 2012, but with the cooler weather this year there was less turtle activity.

It turns out that the reclaimed mines work well as habitat for the sparrow because they collect a layer of leaf litter, a key nesting requirement. I would recommend this if you are going to be out and about and most stations have regular trains all day including Sundays. If you are going to a small place you do need to check that you are not getting on a train with “limited stops” or you will end up back-tracking! The gully was really quite steep in places.
