Big Year Birding Update

Seeing as it is near the midway point of the year I thought it would be nice to check in on how the blogging Big Year birders are doing thus far in 2012. Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996. It’s quite a list!

What’s the Next ABA-Countable Exotic?

In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. Egyptian Goose sightings submitted to eBird in 2011-2012.

Wrap-Up of 2012 Big Year Birding

There were quite a few big years that took place in 2012. Perhaps the biggest big year of 2012 was in Australia. As of 15 December he had seen 744 species and it is unclear if that was his final total or if he added more since. Not only that, but they raised money for the Houston Audubon Society and the Katy Prairie Conservancy.
