New Year’s Day Birding at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

The best place I could come up with that was within a short drive of my in-laws’ place in Yorba Linda was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Irvine, only a quick twenty-minute drive away. I appreciated that aspect of the sanctuary a great deal. San Joaquin was the perfect choice! Especially not like this.

For 3-4 days, opt for the hills, Tresnjica Griffon Vulture Sanctuary and the nearby Tara Mountain National Park with 140 species (not too much, but with Hazel Grouse , Ural , Pygmy and Tengmalm’s Owls , White-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers among them). Great Bustard Sanctuary. Tresnjica Griffon Vulture Sanctuary.

The terms “hooded&# and “headed&# are often only loosely applied in birding nomenclature and I shall return to “ Brown-hooded Cowbird , Red-hooded Woodpecker and Black-chinned Oriole at a later date when the urge to be pedantic strikes again. The only photo I have is the one below, from a trip to Buenos Aires in May 2011.
