Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list. The good news is that Kirtland’s Warbler numbers are up, 1,828 singing males counted in the 2011 census. Previously, even researchers had problems getting access to nesting Kirtland’s Warblers. Now there are volunteer guides, tours and a local festival.

A different research says, from 2002 to 2011 the known populations of forest elephants declined by 62%. Will the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) conference delegates up-list them to Appendix I of the Convention, forbidding any future sale over international borders?

More than 50 years ago, the Hawaiian Goose (Nene) was one of the first birds listed under the Endangered Species Act, part of the inaugural “ Class of 1967 ”. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed downlisting it from “endangered” to “threatened.”. Also, research filled in many knowledge gaps and informed conservation efforts.

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.

These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests. One of these colonies has now been opened to tourism after researchers studying the birds deemed visits by birders to be non-disruptive.
