Irruptions of Snowy Owls in 2011 and again in 2013 found these Arctic birds wintering well south of their usual range , in some cases straying down to Bermuda and even Hawaii. Proposal 2013-A-5 would remove the Hawaiian honeycreepers out of their own subfamily (Drepanidinae) and place them in the subfamily Carduelinae near the rosefinches, which a 2011 study showed to be their closest relatives. This change has been needed and tracks with our best understanding of finch relationships. Shearwater split.

Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. What a bird! Really well.

Smooth-billed Ani ( Crotophaga ani ) is a widespread and ubiquitous bird in disturbed grassy areas throughout much of the neotropics, including most of the Caribbean Islands. Incredibly social, Smooth-billed Anis form monogamous pairs that build a communal nest where all birds share in the responsibilities of feeding and tending to the young.

Tomorrow is Saint Patrick’s Day, a holiday that offers plenty of excuses for drinking, but few prospects for straying from the well-worn celebratory routines. I happened on a whiskey that commemorates a slightly later and lesser-known Hibernian monk who’s got something Paddy certainly does not – a hagiography with a good bird miracle.

It was something like his fifth attempt at the bird. As of Friday, 11 May, Anthony had already seen 283 species in New York State, a blistering and likely record-setting pace ( Richard Fried is the current record-holder with 352 species seen in 2011 ).
