Both Beautiful and Exotic, the Spot-breasted Oriole

Its native range stretches from the southern Pacific coast of Mexico south to northwestern Costa Rica, where it is an inhabitant of arid to semihumid woodland and open areas with scattered trees. Despite being tainted with this fact, I will sheepishly admit that this oriole is a welcome enrichment to our local avifauna.

Our Best Birds of 2020

Unfortunately, this morph is the dominant one at Fuzhou NFPā€) that somehow survived the review process, possibly because the reviewer has had similar experiences. However, it wasn’t until the infamous year of 2020 that I finally laid eyes on it in the marshes of Las Pangas in southern Costa Rica. Preposterous!
