Critically Endangered: Sociable Lapwing

Gujarat, December 2010. Sociable Lapwings breed in several areas along the Kazakhstani – Russian border and overwinter in Iraq, Sudan and northwest India. That can be traced back in time to 1875, when Alfred Brehm wrote that he had found Sociable Lapwings only alongside the domestic cattle.

Definitively the Egyptians!

Finally, when our SUV broke down in Gujarat, India, some three years ago, my first two Egyptians were flying above the road! That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city.

During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. Cattle Tyrant – Machetornis rixosa. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. Las Vegas – Sunset Park.
