Both Puerto Rico and the USVI have active birding communities that are currently excluded from full membership in the ABA family. According to the 2010 Census, the population was about 3.7 All Americans Should be Full Members of the ABA Family. Puerto Rico became a territory in 1898 and a commonwealth in 1952.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. I was attending the 3rd Global Bird-watching Conference in Gujarat and suddenly surrounded not just be species that were completely new, but entire families of birds.
