Cold winters with hard ground and protracted snow cover can prevent them from reaching their main diet constituent of ants and the population can suffer dramatic crashes. 2010/2011 has been tough on many birds, but the Green Woodpecker seems to have come through well in this area with lots of birds seen and plenty more calling.

On May 5, 2010, I adopted a two-year-old poodle/terrier mix from our local shelter, Animal Allies. on the night of September 21, 2011, Angel became restless and woke me up. He told me he had suffered a severe heart attack and had no idea why he had been outside by his van at that hour! My name is Jan. I named her Angel.
