Kennedy initiated the original project, and has returned to the Philippines many times since for research purposes; he seems to think that Rettig’s new project is crazy, but in a good way, and offers a larger perspective from the comfort of a room in (I assume) Cincinnati, where he works for the Museum of Natural History.

Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit. Marc Hauser, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard University, recently opened his own such research lab and has 1,000 dogs lined up as subjects. Horowitz and other scientists are now running experiments to determine what a behavior, like a kiss, really means. Other facilities are operating in the U.S. and Europe. Going to the Dogs.
