An Osprey Nest and The Migratory Bird Treaty Act

This is a poor photo I took of this pair’s nest back in 2009. We have been assured by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) that they are watching this nest also. The new nest is still but a ghost of what the old nest looked like. That is what the Migratory Bird Treaty Act is meant to do.

Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs. The zoo blamed human error for the deaths, saying it didn’t have the expertise to manage the fish and that a lack of dissolved oxygen led to the deaths. And an incident in June 2009, while it didn’t involve death, certainly drew controversy.

This species prefers wetlands and its numbers have been decimated due to a combination of habitat destruction caused by human population growth and illegal removal of birds and eggs from the wild for the pet and zoo trade. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.
