The Collins Bird Guide, 3rd edition

The Collins Bird Guide 2nd edition from 2009 was a much hated taxonomical revolution/nightmare, changing just about everything. Forget occasional escapees, there is an established feral population successfully breeding in the north of Germany, which was 131 birds strong last year.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

We keep our observations to a minimum to avoid disturbance and usually only visit the nest site once to get GPS coordinates to report to Birds Australia’s Nest record Scheme. With the data we have collected over the years we are hoping to address the predation of eggs by feral cats in the Broome area.

We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily! Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. The first eggs are laid during the first week of July each year and if these eggs fail to hatch or the chicks are lost they will lay further eggs within a few weeks.

Finally Saw-Whet

Every March, hope springs anew that I’ll cross paths with one of these feral fluffballs, but as April ends, so do another year’s delirious dreams. Clare and Grant-Broome Western Australia Mar 13th, 2011 at 7:59 pm Well done! We got lucky in Victoria in 2009 and it even had two rather large fledglings.
