Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations. Eventually, the pigeons, as it were, may come home to roost and the waterfowl and other wildlife, as well as hunters and bird watchers, will be sitting ducks.

Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded. As you can imagine, I was champing at the bit to get to this lost paradise and when I finally obtained the necessary permissions in 2008, it didn’t fail to astonish!

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.

I discovered very much by accident that questions have been raised by British birders about the accuracy of some of the book’s photographs; this is the to-do at Birdfair I referred to in the beginning of the review. The chapters, however, offer very good introductions to each bird group. Is the bird pictured what the caption says it is?

According to the World Bank, up to 80 percent of Ghana’s forests had been destroyed by illegal logging by 2008. million hectares in 2007.
