Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

We monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach each year and it can all be covered on foot or by bicycle-tide dependant! With the data we have collected over the years we are hoping to address the predation of eggs by feral cats in the Broome area.

A lot of this material is in her earlier book, Condors in Canyon Country, published by the Grand Canyon Association in 2007, now out-of-print (though available used). I ended up looking for photographs of Peregrine hack sites, captive breeding aviaries, Hawaii tropical forest, and the California Condors of the Grand Canyon on the Internet.

Pied Oystercatcher broken wing display

We are into the second attempt at breeding for this season in Broome for Pied Oystercatchers. Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. She successfully raised a chick in 2007, which has been living in a large flock to the south of Broome. Time will tell!

They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) to the ongoing conservation of breeding Lesser Flamingos at Kimberley’s Kamfers Dam to the Albatross Task Force, which works with fishermen to find solutions to seabird bycatch (birds caught in fishermen’s nets). The first, Field Guide to the Birds of Trinidad & Tobago, was published by Christopher Helm in London in 2007 and then published in the United States in 2008 by Yale University Press.
