I wish we could stop killing animals for reasons related to killing humans. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has defended its use of more than 100 pigs in explosive tests in Wiltshire. Some 119 pigs were used in the research at the Government's military research laboratory Porton Down, near Salisbury, between 2006 and 2009.

In December, the United States Department of Agriculture issued a warning letter to the primate center for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which regulates treatment of many commercial animals from pet kittens to laboratory guinea pigs. And the center added training and banned one researcher from animal contact in response.

But the really telling language begins with the next sentence: "The situation has renewed the debate over whether reopening slaughterhouses in the United States — the last ones closed in 2007 — would help address the problem.". Not approving the institutionalized slaughter of the horses we claim to hold so dear lowers that value.

To the Editor: I appreciate Nicolette Hahn Niman’s efforts in raising awareness about the conditions in which pigs are raised (“ Pig Out ,” Op-Ed, March 14), but I was struck by her comment that it is incumbent on us to ensure that animals have decent lives because we ask them to make the ultimate sacrifice for us.

To the Editor: Re “ Virus Spreading Alarm and Deadly Pig Disease in China ” (Business Day, Aug. Though it may be too late for too many, we can only hope that diseased animals are not left in pain but are humanely euthanized to end their suffering. In the long term, there is a glimmer of hope for China’s pigs.
