A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. They offered him hand-outs and cared enough about him, not to call Animal Control and risk having him picked up and sent to a shelter where his fate would be doomed.

At that time it was not a nature reserve at all and the forty hectare piece of land was only acquired in 2001. It is a sheltered area with numerous picnic tables for the people visiting and bird feeders for the feathered variety of visitors. Our first stop was the area marked Wild Bird Cafe next to the car-park.
