The scale of massacres is such that in 2001 the Italian customs found 120,702 dead birds from Serbia in just one lorry. And that flight is illegal because EU legislation does not allow export of game meat from Serbia to EU. The Turtle Dove is not a trophy animal. Then comes summer and the birds start migrating.

A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. They offered him hand-outs and cared enough about him, not to call Animal Control and risk having him picked up and sent to a shelter where his fate would be doomed.

This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version. The trip was probably reasonably well planned and it would have been known to these travelers that game birds, as well as deer and fish, were abundant in the region they were traveling to. et al 2001. ca 1630–1647.
