Back from Seattle

We had a blast, the family and I, and experienced some amazing natural places, to say nothing of the fine city of Seattle. To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. The Lucky Diner on First Avenue in Seattle has delicious food.

The benefits of hurricanes in Southeast Arizona

The diversity of the area affords one the ability to acquire a pretty impressive list of species. Now please understand, having lived on the Baja for eight years, and suffering thru 6 hurricanes, I would never wish one of these monsters on anybody. When word of this bird’s discovery came, I was up in Seattle for a Saturday wedding.

Dead Sea Lions in Puget Sound - Again

The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. KING says one of the Nisqually casualties was a Steller sea lion, protected under the Endangered Species Act. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.

Consider the Chickadee

These birds certainly have a big fan in Alex Washoe, a freelance writer and bookseller in Seattle, WA. Last year, I moved out to the suburbs and was delighted to find many new species I wasn’t familiar with. The chickadee that I discovered on the sidewalk was suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.
