We have just returned from an incredible three weeks in Singapore, where unlike many others who visit the country we spent the whole time in nature parks, forests and gardens observing birds. We travelled to Singapore from Broome overnight on 5th March arriving in the early morning of the 6th March. We had arrived at 09:15am.

During our three week visit to Singapore in March we spent a good part of each day walking and birding. We were then able to walk down Upper Thomson Road and get public transport back to our hotel. Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. For example , fallen figs do not seem to mind catching a ride with Oriental Pied Hornbills.

If you happen to find yourself in Melbourne then there are also plenty of places to go birding in the city itself or not far by public transport. Herdsman Lake is easily accessible by public transport, but when we have visited by vehicle we have gone further afield to Yanchep National Park and the Perth Hills. Pasir Ris Park-Singapore.
