This time, we are back in Trinidad and have relocated to a picturesque lodge in the very heart of the island. Larger reptiles also are in abundance, including several skinks and ground lizards, Gold Tegus, and Green Iguanas. The thick melodies of Cocoa and Spectacled Thrushes tend to be the first sounds under the lightening sky.

The mongabay.com portal has compared data on a unit of area basis of the percentage of the total global number of species of birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, fish and vascular plants. And small country often equals short distances and easy traveling. Not surprisingly, most are underdeveloped.

Hidden away in that boatyard is an amazingly good spot to buy roti, which rivaled doubles as my favorite food that I sampled while in Trinidad and Tobago. This happened in Trinidad and Guyana in the urban areas to make it easier and faster to eat the items, as the individuals’ hands would not get as dirty. What, exactly, is roti?

I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. Over fifteen different butterflies frequent our yard now, but I’m certain there are more as I’m not that good with insects in general. Of course, various species of bats as well.
