If that’s not possible, she needs the knowledgeable care of a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Wildlife rehabbers love the public. Somehow they manage to get the bird or animal to a rehabilitator, even though finding one is often a feat in itself. Why do wildlife rehabilitators not love the public?

Normally she would be living somewhere in Europe or Asia, but she was born and raised in captivity in the United States. She lives with her handler, wildlife rehabilitator Lisa Acton, in upstate New York. But raising an ed bird means you can coochy-coochy them to your heart’s content. Xena is always calm and dignified.

Of all the billions of things that keep wildlife rehabilitators from sleeping at night, public releases are one of the big ones. For a heart-stopping second he lost altitude, then he raised his wings and rocketed up toward the far trees. My latest Red-tailed hawk was one of them. In an instant, he was gone.

“Landon was raised illegally by a man who imprinted her and then released her. I trained her for education programs, and I like to think I am smarter than a crow, but Landon often had me wondering who was training whom. It is very sad indeed to lose such an inquisitive, beautiful and intelligent little friend.
