We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. If there is an entrance wound, there is an exit wound. Luckily, this wound was not as severe.

The sharp strings are a menace to passing birds – especially kites and other raptors – who cannot see them and sometimes suffer grievous, if not fatal, wounds. When Nadeem and Mohammed first began in 2003, few veterinarians would suture the wounds of birds, saying they were too small.
