Over the last two weeks, we raised our faces and sniffed. They receive no protection, and are often destroyed by salvage logging as quickly as possible. There is currently a push to place the Black-backed Woodpecker, in its Oregon/California and South Dakota populations, under the protection of the Federal Endangered Species Act.

The general public is out and about, birds and animals are raising their young, and human/wildlife interaction is at its peak. Why is there no state or federal money available to care for federally protected species? It’s August, and first on the menu is: Fried Rehabber. Summer is high season.
