A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. This time I observed them with 10s in bright sunshine, only ten metres above, seeing every detail: enormous lime-green parrots with blue flight feathers and loud, raucous calls!

Deer, cattle, camel and goats are more closely related to dolphins and whales then they are with horses.

Licking Clay: the Macaws of Tambopata, Peru

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. At this hour I am a reluctant, under-caffeinated sherpa – and concentration must be given to the dangers of the footpath ahead.

They’ve Got an Awful Lot of Birds in Brazil.

Favorite Psittacidae: Hyacinth Macaw is one of Brazil’s signature birds (along with the Jabiru) and we had several excellent looks at this stunning, large (the largest parrot in the world according to Cornell’s Neotropical Birds) bird. Favorite Mammal: Jaguar for the win!

Birding Inirida, Colombia, or river dolphins and hoatzins, part 2

The afternoon birds also included Capped Heron , Mealy Parrot , Drab Water Tyrant , Amazonian Tyrannulet , Green-tailed Jacamar and more than 40 Sand-colored Nighthawks.
