To the Editor: Re “ Another Horse-Racing Horror ” (editorial, May 6): Thank you for adding your voice to the many who are demanding that the welfare of racehorses should come before profits. Most wind up auctioned off for a few dollars each and sent to the foreign slaughterhouses to be made into pet food or dinner for someone overseas.

Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. He’s right: I don’t care deeply about the suffering of animals I eat, wear or otherwise benefit from. Suffering and injustice are inherent in life, and time is short.
