Thanks to fortunate foresight, a lot of land was set aside in Costa Rica as national parks and protected areas (and some of these are easily accessed) but the best forest still happens to be at the terminus of the road and en route, you will be treated to species deficit birding in plenty of pastures. Lots of monkeys there too.

In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. Gelada communications include intense staring with raised eyebrows. This has resulted in their populations returning to natural levels and their fear of humans being curtailed.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . All these forests are in “protected” forest reserves, however at some, logging permits are reportedly being issued for harvesting of these forests. What makes Ghana so special?
