Why Would a Wild Rabbit Let Humans Pet It?

My son (m8) and some of his neighborhood friends found a rabbit outside, and apparently it let the kids get close enough that some were able to pet it (I made it very clear to my son that I didn’t want him touching the rabbit). We’re in Minnesota if that helps. Any thoughts?
