It was in the great borough of Queens in New York City that I first discovered both beer and birding, two great loves of my life that happily intersect with great regularity here at Birds and Booze. We were fans of the Dominican lager El Presidente (mostly on account of the cool name) and Guinness was always a favorite.

Best Bird of the Weekend (2nd of July 2016)

Mike’s Best Bird of the Weekend was the Caspian Tern (like the one above) that greeted him upon his arrival at Lake Michigan. The bittern was nice but it was even better to see Desi even if he didn’t want to leave to head home to hot New York City! How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend?

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of August 2012)

My Best Bird(s) of the Weekend were a trio of cranes, presumably Sandhills , crossing high above the interstate as I drove out of Michigan. David Ringer , who recently moved to New York City, spotted it and was immediately confused by the jubilation this common bird caused in the Queens birders with whom he was birding.

Kirtland’s Warbler in Central Park

For some reason, even though there are Mandarin Ducks in zoos throughout New York City, this escapee has become an internationally known tourist attraction, even heading the New York Times list of “Five Times the Internet Was Actually Fun in 2018.” Evening Grosbeak, Michigan.

Male Ruddy Ducks Oxyura jamaicensis in Basic Plumage

I will never forget seeing a flock of around 1,000 birds in Michigan, especially as it took me two decades to come up with a total of two observations (at a single bird each, both females) of its European/central Asian counterpart. They’re lovely birds, and they didn’t ask to come here, after all.
