When news later reached our little town (likely through a newspaper) that the bird-killing chemical was to be banned, my environmental activism was born. 360 miles of National Park land at the border!

I think this is why I understand the thinking of people who don't want us to use animals but who promote changing the way we use them to decrease their numbers or their suffering. I understand the impulse to do " something " that alters the number of animals created to be used and killed and the suffering of the ones created.

I know on some level, I think that’s something almost all of us can get behind…no one, except the most callous and cold-hearted of the human race things its fine to torture animals, or deny that they are capable of pain and suffering. The logic of this is ridiculous.

In fact, animals used for food do suffer a great deal. Not only are they killed in cruel ways, but it is well documented that they are raised in ways that cause them great discomfort and agony. Now there is no doubt that the actual treatment of animals used for food is immoral, that animals are made to suffer needlessly.

Maybe they have decided to boycott species with Russian-sounding names as a way to protest against Putin’s policies. If you are suffering from depression, you just have found another reason to go birding. In fact, websites such as this one seem to offer package tours just to kill woodcocks.
