Ackerman understands how to set a scene, fill it with charismatic real-life characters, and top it off with magic–the hoot of a distant Great Gray Owl, a Burrowing Owl evading capture, an old barn sheltering young Barn Owls, a tree full of Long-eared Owls in the middle of a small town in northern Serbia. They are also hunted.

Additionally, each of Antarctica’s so-called endemic species ( Emperor Penguin, Antarctic Petrel and South Polar Skua ) actually wander more widely in the southern oceans and have been known to turn up in other locations. Let’s explore some of these far-off places and the birds that find shelter here.

The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. We’ve got a couple of stake outs where we can watch not just for this raptor, the world’s largest, but where moa kills can sometimes be seen too. It certainly has no known relatives. Next we head to Invercargill.
