Alexander Alvarez of Atmore, Alabama, has pled guilty to “killing migratory birds and selling the feathers on the black market” in a killing spree that dates back to 2006. It’s nice to see laws against killing birds and selling their feathers enforced.

He said the federal government’s and Alaska’s state rules were, for the most part, okay; they were consistent and generally made sense for the safety of both humans and wildlife, and in many respects, coincided with his own views of protecting the native environment. This represents 6% of the estimated mid-continental spring population of 322,700 birds for the same two decades. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.

Maybe it was a version of the Mississippi River, maybe it was a version of the Warren River, likely both. Every now and the the loosing Loon would disappear like it had been killed and sunk. Atop the ridge, where no one will ever build cabins because it is too high up, is a grove of white pines. Then one day they are gone.
