Mites will eventually kill the bird. Call and transport the bird to a bird rehabber ASAP. It needs to be properly medicated and triaged. Did you know a bird’s body has the ability to seal a small puncture wound within minutes? Most likely the bird will need to be medicated for a few days “just in case.”.

The eagle was so hypothermic I was reluctant to put her in a transport box. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. But in birds they eat living tissue, and once they are internal will kill the patient. If there is an entrance wound, there is an exit wound.
