I recently heard from Chris Kirkby, the Managing Director and Principal Investigator at Asociacion Fauna Forever , a Peruvian not-for-profit organisation based in Lima and Puerto Maldonado, about a series of bird-banding workshops being held this June and November in the rainforests of Tambopata in south-eastern Peru. Wicked, right?

This is all in a day’s work and a typical morning here at the Tambopata Research Center in the Madre de Dios district of Peru where, on behalf of the conservation agency Earthwatch Institute , I have come to volunteer for two weeks for the Tambopata Macaw Project. That’s right – birds eating clay. Scarlet Macaws.

In the northern hemisphere, the combination of migrants, resident species, and higher frequency of bird song makes it much easier to identify more birds, compared to say, August, so if you want to get really crazy and go for a Big Day record, spring is the time to go for it. They got all three potoo species in Costa Rica.
