Freeman says that the most difficult thing he has encountered so far in his research comes not from the lab, but from people’s attitudes about animal testing. This is something not seen in very young children but then typically develops and becomes observable and testable by psychology graduate students who have done innumerable studies on it. A number of research projects have sought to determine if some of these human brain abilities are found in other animals. But that’s another story.

Marc Hauser, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard University, recently opened his own such research lab and has 1,000 dogs lined up as subjects. In some cases, their research suggests that our pets are manipulating us rather than welling up with human-like feeling. Other facilities are operating in the U.S. and Europe.
