Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas. Wallaby seeks shelter beside an excavator. Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. Waiting for a long train!

Crisscrossed by 24″ pipelines transporting oil from numerous offshore platforms, oil companies exercised the strongest presence here. Birding was difficult from the road as birdsong was often overshadowed by the deafening roar of a truck thundering past or some industrial device whirring into being.
