This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Tianmashan bonus mammal: a Raccoon Dog – though it looks a lot like a raccoon, it is actually more closely related to foxes than to raccoons. And it does not even live in reeds. Did the bird thank me?

Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. I’d never heard raccoons make that particular weird noise before, but that was my best guess as to what it was. Larry’s BBOTY – Great Gray Owl.

By building nests out over the swamp, the birds benefit from the protection offered by the alligators in deterring predators such as raccoons and snakes. Snowy Egrets were also showing off their breeding colours and Wood Storks were carrying small branches to add to precarious platforms that will soon have to serve as nests.
