Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). And it does not even live in reeds. Did the bird thank me?

Best Bird of the Year 2014

Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. The experience, the place, and the bird combine to make this my BBOTY. I’d never heard raccoons make that particular weird noise before, but that was my best guess as to what it was.
