The Black-tailed Deer , or, in this case, the Columbian Black-tailed Deer , is not a full species, but one of two black-tailed subspecies of Mule Deer.* It is found from northern California to British Columbia though it formerly ranged must further east before it was hunted out of its eastern haunts.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915. I had the antelope greet me on my way in, and this Mule Deer doe, was there to say goodbye on my way out.
