From Hiro, we learn how Northern Pygmy Owls are “rule breakers,” not incubating eggs till all are hatched and then raising owlets that mature at the same rate even though the eggs were laid asynchronously (as most owl eggs are). They are also hunted. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them.

If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Some rehabbers even have surrogate ducks or geese that they can raise a lone chick with and teach it to survive.

I once knew a guy who kept and raised cats. When you throw the feral Cat in there, not only do they push out the indigenous wild carnivores, but they are hunting animals that are not quite adapted to avoiding them as well as they may be to avoiding other animals. But they don’t live in North America. Unless we put them there.

All the info I needed came in an e-mail from a Minnesota birder named Peder. I got out of the car, climbed a small hill where the shooting benches were and realized I was looking at a fabulous patch of habitat for a great gray owl to hunt. The day shift, hunting the meadow. I gazed at the bird, its eyes looking right through me.
