Harris’s Sparrow, Central Park, NYC. Now, if you know NYC geography and its transit system, you will know that it isn’t always easy to get from the East side to the West side, where the Harris’s Sparrow was located. And, because of a special family event (see below), I happened to be in Los Angeles County over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Gareth Hazell Mar 4th, 2011 at 5:11 pm I’ll be on the hunt for Melodius Larks in the neighborhood and going to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens for another look at the Grey Wagtail!! We, along the coast in Los Angeles County, have a FY Harris’s Sparrow here now for about a week. Really nice! Happy Birding!

In addition to providing a pathway for identification, the “Identification Tips” occasionally talk about bird behavior, a feature not usually included in the individual species descriptions: Spizella sparrows tend to fly high when flushed, Robins eat berries in winter. Every one of these field guides is excellent.
