Once considered a distinct race of the more widespread Pied Wheatear, it is now regarded as a full species in its own right. One September I watched a pack of seven Eleonora’s hunting a juvenile Swift. Despite being common and relatively approachable, it’s one of those birds that are remarkably difficult to photograph.

The slaughter tourism trade in Serbia

10,000 Birds

As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. The cargo was meant to be sold as delicacies to restaurants in Italy. Local bird protection NGOs have been demanding a hunting ban on both Quails and Turtle Doves ever since. Too little, too late – yes; but still a step in the right direction.

The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

Dates of first arrival listed by Schorger (1966) are: Italy 1520, Germany 1530, France 1538, England 1541, Denmark and Norway 1550, Sweden 1556. The believability of this is underscored by the fact that the Pilgrims and their guides listed among their possession numerous “fowling pieces” … for hunting wild birds.
