In recent years Indonesia has been competing with the Andes as the region giving rise to the biggest number of undescribed bird species (naturally, all of them endemics). But since Indonesia has more than 1,700 bird species (and that many islands, too), why is this guide dealing only with 1,400?

Borneo is the third largest island in the world; politically it is divided amongst three countries–Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Indonesia (Kalimantan) and the sultanate of Brunei. I’m already looking up birding tours of Borneo and pricing airfares. Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree.

So–the book covers islands that belong to the Republic of Indonesia and to Malaysia. But, it doesn’t cover all or Indonesia or all of Malaysia. And, there is A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Indonesia: Second Edition by Morten Strange (2012). Does it make a difference?
