Hornbills of Sabah

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). The first attempt in hunting was made by the male hornbill which was seen snapping at a passing swiftlet, but was unsuccessful.

Might have something to do with the fact that they were hunted here until quite recently). The red tufts of the Fire-tufted Barbet (Fraser’s Hill, Malaysia) look like they are poisonous to touch. And indeed, birds are much more visible even in big Indian cities such as Delhi than they are in Shanghai.

So–the book covers islands that belong to the Republic of Indonesia and to Malaysia. But, it doesn’t cover all or Indonesia or all of Malaysia. Does the fact that this guide doesn’t include all of Indonesia or Malaysia mean that a birder going to these countries will have to invest in multiple field guides?

Phillipps’ Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo: A Book Review

Borneo is the third largest island in the world; politically it is divided amongst three countries–Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Indonesia (Kalimantan) and the sultanate of Brunei. I’m already looking up birding tours of Borneo and pricing airfares. Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree.
