The argument is straightforward: birders (and others, including hunters) buy stamps and the federal government turns around and obtains important bird habitat. Not long ago, I posted a list of the 25 best National Wildlife Refuges for birding. Ottawa NWR (Ohio): 83.8%. In June, the 2018-2019 Federal Duck Stamp was released.

As you’ll remember, Kentucky’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources unanimously passed its sandhill crane hunting proposal. All eight hunters on the commission think it’s a good idea to shoot cranes in Kentucky. Fish and Wildlife Service for final approval or denial. Why allow hunters to shoot right into the middle of them?

In my home state, Bald Eagles are breeding in 35 Ohio counties. Bald Eagles will provide a sporting challenge for hunters. Hunters don’t even need to use decoys. However they are wary and have famously sharp eyes, so bagging eagles will be a true sporting challenge for hunters. Soon, they may overrun available habitat.

But best of all — the thing that shows, surely, that he was born under a lucky star, is this: he’s now (as of 2005, when he migrated, permanently, to Ohio) — a Buckeye. Kaufman knows that duck hunters can be ardent, loving conservationists, too. Kaufman is a terrific writer and A Season on the Wind is a terrific book.

In 2012 , the NFC revised some of its goals and set forth a new vision of waterfowl management that emphasized a core of hunter and conservationist supporters. Nationally, most birdwatching occurred in California (9%), followed by New York (6%), Texas (5%), Pennsylvania (5%), Florida (5%), and Ohio (4%). Citation: Patton, Stephanie.

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
