A large and striking bird like this would be hard to neglect in a museum collection. These conditions offered easy access to hunters in a habitat where a bird as large as a Guan would have little chances to hide or scape. This came as rumor of a turkey-like bird occurs in the steep canyons on the foothill of the western Andes.

After we got back to the cars everyone pulled chairs out and sat down for a cup of tea (I had neglected to bring some but was not to go without thanks to the hospitality of these fine people). I must have been very lucky with my timing because I was there when swamp mahoganies were flowering and this brings the nectar hunters in droves.
